Darker Emissions & Shady Distribution

Hi again,

The new items mentioned in the last update have now been posted to the irr. Bandcamp site. These are:

The July installment of Vesicular Distributor (I accidentally posted both of the August images last time)

Vesicular Distributor 07a cvr

The August installment of Vesicular Distributor

Vesicular Distributor 08a cvr

The irr.-manipulation-of-NWW-live-sources album ‘A Darker Shade Of Fat’

A Darker Shade OF Fat cvr

The new irr. album ‘Nocturnal Emissaries’

Nocturnal Emissary cvr

And — not posted yet, but I’m nearly ready with it and am really looking forward to finishing it so I can actually get some sleep someday — the spoken word album ‘HCA’, which is an absurdist derangement of the already really peculiar writings of Hans Christian Andersen. I used his texts, but strategically omitted parts of them to make the content more abstract — although with the restriction of not changing or re-ordering any of the content, just leaving out parts of it. Should be posted in the next couple of hours.

Thanks to everyone for their continued support!

Back On The Mechanical Bull

Hi All,

After a month of being computer-less, I’m finally fully reconnected and functional. The unexpected failure of the replacement computer I’d set up after my earlier unexpected computer failure created some serious obstacles for me… I was unable to post the July installment of ‘Vesicular Distributor’ (or anything else), I couldn’t get any work done, I couldn’t access any of my files, I couldn’t access this website, and I could only get meagre internet access from one of those awful smartphones everyone seems to love so much. This has taught me to keep a written password key somewhere in my studio: these days there are more passwords than I can possibly commit to memory, so if the device with my password manager fails, it shuts me out of a lot of important resources. An old-styley analog backup can be a useful thing.

A public service announcement: do not order a computer directly from Dell! I’ve never been particularly knowledgeable about hardware, so I thought this would be a good way to get some proper tech advice from a sales rep before I bought anything. The result was hardly shy of outright fraud. I didn’t have any internet access at the time, so I called the Dell help line and placed my order on the phone (never do this!); I was sold a brand new computer with a good processor, but sent an old, discontinued computer with a older, slower processor, and was charged more for it than had been quoted over the phone. Fortunately, I was able to return the dud machine and get a refund, but it took endless hours of being left on hold to get it sorted out. And by the time I got my refund I had been left stranded for a month without a computer — which meant being unable to work, which meant being unable to generate any income. Most of you probably already know this and are more tech-savvy than I am, but in case you aren’t: stay away from Dell direct sales! In the age of reckless Amazon indifference, it seems impossible to find honest & transparent dealings anywhere.

Vesicular Distributor 08a cvr
Vesicular Distributor 08b cvr

On to more positive news: I have the July and August installments of Vesicular Distributor ready to post in time for Bandcamp’s no-fee Friday tomorrow. I’ve also put together a few other things to try to compensate for the month of income I missed in August. Apologies for putting out another clump of stuff all at once: if you can grab it all on the no-fee day tomorrow it would of course be very much appreciated, but everything will still be around after that if your finances are slim.

A Darker Shade OF Fat cvr

One of the new things offered tomorrow at the irr. Bandcamp site will be ‘A Darker Shade Of Fat’, the third plundering of my Nurse With Wound live recording archive. The first instance was of course the NWW album ‘Dark Fat’, followed by the outtake & extras irr./NWW collection ‘Dark Drippings’. The original ‘Fat’ was created to be part of a box set of NWW live-derived material, but Steve liked it enough that he wanted to give it a solo release; at that time, the box set was still going to happen, so I started work on some new material to replace the missing ‘Fat’. That is the provenance of these ‘Shade’ tracks. The idea for the box set gently evaporated, so I never needed to completely finish the replacement tracks, and they have languished in their penultimate state for the past 3 years. While looking for something very-nearly-done that I could get ready in time for the 4th, this project immediately came to mind. Just as the cover of ‘Dark Drippings’ was a spin on Steve’s collage for the ‘Dark Fat’ CD cover, the cover for ‘Shade’ is a spin on his collage for the DF vinyl set.

Another item scheduled for tomorrow will be a brandeloquenly-newified album called ‘Nocturnal Emissaries: An Audio Inquiry In Seven Secretions’. This material is an exploration in taking studio improvisation, nudging it part-way into textural abstraction, and then basting the results in a viscous, atmospheric gravy. Intended for the nourishment all sentient beings everywhere, but probably to the taste of only a modest few.

A third item is in preparation, but, if I manage to finish it in time, I’ll post about that when I send out all the links tomorrow.

All the best to everyone,

–msw

Permutable Equivalences

Fellow organisms,

It’s taken an unexpectedly long amount of time, but I finally have some new physical releases in stock! I don’t know what’s going on with the postal system, but it’s taking ages for packages to cross the ocean these days. Whatever poor dolphin was being forced to balance those boxes on its head all the way across the Atlantic must be exhausted now.

First is the second collaborative project (four years in the making!) between irr. and world-famous Finnish audio derangificator Umpio, entitled ‘Permutable Schema‘. As the title suggests, this is a double CD housed in an elegant tri-fold glossy cardstock wallet. It’s been released through the Vibora label, which I know nearly nothing about — apparently this is their second release, the first being a CD by Lithuanian performance artist Daina Dieva. They’ve done a very nice job with it, in any event. Varied sources from both audio projects were used throughout, but the irr.-itant decided the final nuances of disc one while the Umplifier determined the shape of disc two.

I only have 25 copies of this to sell, so if you’d like a copy, some alacrity might be in order. You can get it from me here. If you’re in Europe, I’m still happy to sell you one, but you can save some postage by getting it from the Umpio website here.

The second item is the indecently titillating (if I do say so myself) clear vinyl 10″ ‘Are All Things Equivalent?’, released by the remarkably enduring Drone Records label. Drone has done a great job putting the package together — two handsome releases at once that I didn’t have to manufacture myself! The world has gone mad!

I’ve got about 40 copies to sell, so, again, best not to wait too long if you want one. Get it from me here. If you’re in Europe and would like to avoid the horrendous postage, you can get your copy from the Drone website here, or if you’re in the UK you can grab one from the nefarious ICR cartel here.

Shop listings for both ‘Schema’ and ‘Equivalent’ have bundle buttons at the bottom (try saying that five times fast) that have pre-calculated combined postage for both items in postal combination.

If you’ve had your fill of physical media, ‘Equivalent’ has also been added to the irr. Bancamp site here.

While preparing for the tragic necessity of having to move later in the year, I came across a small stash of Nurse With Wound shirts: a handful of the shirts made for the Queen Elizabeth Hall show way back in 2007 (featuring the ‘Shipwreck Radio Final Broadcast’ image) and two of the ‘flower girl’ shirts (using the ‘Rock ‘N’ Roll Station’ cover image, drawn by a young Lily Stapleton). I’m offering them for sale at $15 + postage each. These are black, standard, short-sleeve shirts, and are all new, never-been-worn items. The images above are actual photographs of the actual shirt designs, photographed by an actual photographer who was eating pho while wearing a toga made out of graph paper. They are available in the following sizes and quantites:

Final Shipwreck shirt: 4 x Large, 2 x Extra Large

Flower Girl: 1 x Large, 1 x Extra Large

I’m not making a shop listing for them since the quantities are tiny, so if you’d like one of these get in touch at irrappext@gmail.com and I can verify that your selection is still available. I’m happy to calculate combined postage for the shirts with any of the other items. If you’re one of the people who has already ordered the 10″ and/or 2CD from the Bandcamp listing, I can figure combined postage for you minus what you’ve already paid.

For a very limited time, I’m also offering the 5 NWW discs in the shop (‘Insect & Individual Silenced’, ‘Fleas Of A Thousand Camels’, ‘Ød Lot’, ‘Automating 3’ and the ‘Possible Nursemix’ CDR) in a discount bundle for $25 + postage ($3 for Media Mail in the U.S. or, tragically, $24 for First Class International anywhere else). Again, I’m happy to calculate combined postage with any of the other items: emailgamate me if you’re interested.

Hey! I didn’t have to come up with any desperate fund-raiser ideas to pay my taxes this year! Making barely any money does sometimes have its positive effects: your tax bill gets smaller.

Next up: I’m nearly finished preparing a group of irr. live recordings for listing on Bandcamp, including the recent Imbolc Sleep Concert performance in Portland, and the only overseas irr. event to date at the Wave-Gotik-Treffen in Leipzig back in 2010 (which includes a rousing interpretation of the Nurse With Wound/Diana Rogerson track ‘Wisecrack’). More news on this soon.

until next time,
–msw

4 Orphans Expanded

Hello all:

I’ve been working feverishly on the ‘4 Orphans’ handmade project, and although the edition is not 100% finished I’m just going to spill the beans about it now to see what kind of response I get. It’s only 8 weeks behind schedule, so I’m doing better than usual! But it was a particularly rough 8 weeks. I usually avoid doing pre-orders, but it’s so close to completion that it’ll barely be a pre-order for most people: about a week for the first 40 or so orders, and between 2-3 weeks for the rest.

The details:

This is a handmade, hardbound-packaged CDR version of the irr. app. (ext.)/Nurse With Wound ‘4 Orphans’ collaboration.

The disc includes all 4 original tracks, plus 3 additional tracks: ‘Formless’, a drastic reworking of the original sources which was created in 2015, and ‘Burren Amateur Zoological Survey 2006’ and ‘A Walk In A Strange Field’, two new tracks built almost entirely from recordings made at Cooloorta and in the Burren. This is almost 30 minutes of extra material, bringing the total duration to slightly over an hour.

The packaging is a hardbound book-style cover containing a 7-page booklet with the full text about the origins of the project (as is included with the download version). The last page of each booklet features an original ink drawing of ‘Bufo gillespianus’, the scarce & elusive Bearded Burren Toad, rendered on a photograph of it’s natural habitat around Mullach Mór (examples below). Also included is a comforting slab of black foam with the edition number & owner’s name hand-inscribed in silver (see photos). The edition number & owner’s name will also be written on the toad drawing page.

More details:

The labour & materials for this project far (far) exceeded what I had anticipated, so I’m asking $40 per copy. This is more than I had intended to charge, but the main point of the project was to raise some funds while I recovered from my medical misfortunes, so I hope you’ll forgive the large-ish price tag this time around. I’m planning to do more handmade editions, but am experimenting with other methods & materials to try to keep the costs lower in the future. This first attempt was slightly rushed, and involved a steep learning curve and several missteps before I got everything figured out properly.

The edition size is 85 copies. I have 45 of those just about ready to stroll out the door. Part of the reason for doing this as a pre-order is that I’m not sure of how much interest there will be (especially with the higher price). If only get 20 orders, then I can adjust the edition size down to 50; if I get 50 orders, I have the assembly procedures streamlined well enough now that I can get the remaining edition of 85 ready within a couple of weeks.

Even more details:

The packaging is not factory-made: it is very much a hand-assembled item. I mention this again because there are the inevitable rough edges and irregularities unavoidable with a hand-made project, and I want everyone to be fully aware of what they’ll be getting. But I’ll also add that I put considerable effort & attention to detail into every aspect of this, and I think that results are very nice. After seeing the completed package, Steve, Colin and Andrew each gave me an unreservedly enthusiastic response.

A few other details I feel I should mention. I added the foam piece because the the spine turned out a bit wider than was really necessary, and I wanted to add some support so the packaging didn’t get damaged during shipping. To make it more relevant than just padding, I added the hand-written name & number. THE FOAM IS NOT EDIBLE.

I also added an obi strip (see photos above & below) so the title would be visible from the spine when placed on a shelf; this did not turn out in an entirely satisfactory way, since the printed paper I used does not crease as cleanly as I would have liked. I’ll investigate some better option next time, but I felt it’s a minor enough point to let pass on this one.

The final detail is that I couldn’t find a resealable sleeve the right size that didn’t have the adhesive on the flap. My experience with sleeves having adhesive on the flap is that they inevitably (& annoyingly) stick to the packaging when you’re removing or replacing the item, and this can sometimes cause damage. To avoid this, I’ve trimmed off the adhesive strip and added my own adhesive tabs to the body of the sleeve, where sticking & damage are far less likely.

The bottom line:

If you want a copy, you can send $40 + postage via Paypal to irrappext@gmail.com. I’m not going to make a shop entry for this yet: I’m hoping it won’t be necessary and this announcement will be enough. For addresses in the US, the total with Media Mail postage is $44 ($4 for a 7 oz. package). If you want it sent Priority Mail instead, the total is $49.

For overseas addresses, the postage is more complicated. The USPS has raised its international rates yet again, so a mere 7 oz. package now costs $14 to send to the UK or Europe. To lower this amount, I’m trying to work something out with a friend in the UK where I send him a Priority Mail bundle of 15 discs together and he’ll send along the individual packets. This would lower the per-disc cost for the bundle down to $5 each. The Royal Mail 2nd Class rates for a 7 oz. (198g) parcel appears to be £2.95 ($4), so that would bring the total UK postage down to $9 ($5 USPS + $4 Royal Mail), and I can knock a couple of dollars off to make a $47 total for the UK. Royal Mail International Standard rates to most European countries is £4.45 ($6), and again dropping off a couple dollars makes it $49 total for Europe. Delivery time will obviously be somewhat longer doing it this way.

Of course, this only works if I get at least 15 overseas orders and my friend agrees to do it. So if you’re in the UK or Europe you can send $40 to reserve a copy of the disc, and I’ll contact you with postage details once I have 15 orders. If the bundle plan works, that will be an additional $7 (UK) or $9 (EU). If it doesn’t, both will be $14, and if anyone (understandably) finds that too expensive, I will refund their $40. Sorry this is so complicated! I hope to get a more straightforward strategy worked out before next time.

Feel free to contact me with questions at irrappext@gmail.com.

thanks for your time

Carnackopia, Bandcamplitude, Lean Fat

Hello all,

I’ve been especially busy since the last news post, and lots of things are fizzing and burbling the in eie kitchen this summer, but more will be said of that soon enough. Right now, there are three main things to mention: new Thomas Carnacki items in the shop, new listings on the irr. Bandcamp page, and the long-awaited release (and disappointing outcome) of the Dark Fat vinyl edition.

From out of the arid wilderness of the California East Bay has recently arrived a shipment (transported by donkey caravan, as always) of two new offerings from the infamous Thomas Carnacki cabal. The first of these is a vinyl 7″ elaborately titled ‘Where’s My Love, My Eyes Are Gone, The Rains Are Coming (Second Begemot)‘. In order to maximize it’s damage to the human condition, this insidious document has manifested itself in three different ways: as black vinyl (limited to 400 copies), as blue vinyl (limited to 100 copies) and as blue vinyl swathed in a special edition, custom-made cloth sleeve (limited to 50 copies). The cloth sleeves come in a cheerful variety of colours, which include, but are not limited to, those hues which have been known to occur in nature.

The special numbered edition also contains the additional bonus of an original pen & ink drawing by the High Carnackiphant himself, Gregory “Don’t Call Me Barbara” Scharpen. All three options are available in the shop, but in limited quantities.

The second TC item is the very limited 3″ CDR ‘The Infant’s Trajectory‘, a few copies of which managed to survive the shenanigans at the 15th Annual Outsound New Music Summit (a shameless bacchanal that, with every passing year, drags more of our innocent youth into the quagmire of self-indulgence and depravity). Each copy (which have been scrupulously cleansed of any residual traces of moral turpitude, in case you were concerned) is numbered and features festive hand-drawn pen & ink artwork on the disc, once again rendered by the aforementioned Scharpen. Full details can be found on the item pages.

In order to help lubricate the effectiveness of your shopping experience, a variety of combined-postage bundles have been prepared for both new items. Buttons for the 3″ and 7″ (each version) combined together can be found underneath the individual-purchase buttons on each page, as well as larger bundles that include the 3″ and the 7″ plus the other 3 Thomas Carnacki CDs in the shop, and a deluxe bundle that includes all of these items as well as the legendary Thomas Carnacki / Vulcanus 68 split LP. Just scroll down to see all of the options.

“Listening to the music of Thomas Carnacki is probably the most profoundly sexual sensory experience I’ve ever had — and I grew up on a chinchilla farm.” — William Hope Hodgson

Three new listings have been added to the irr. app. (ext.) Bandcamp page, all three of which were previously only available on cassette: Flux/Crayfish (2011), The 11-Year Backwards Sleepwalk (also 2011), and Yma Dhym Mûr Varthegyon (the irr. side from the 2013 ‘Arpt Verjennepp Tonxtie’ split cassette). ‘Yma Dhym…’ has been extended from the original 23-minute version on the cassette to a robust 33 minutes — and each individual one of those extra ten minutes its worth 10 minutes in itself. The download version of ‘Sleepwalk’ is rumoured to contain a hidden bonus track, but this rumour is so scurrilous and despicable that I refuse to even make mention of it.

On a less exultant note, the triple-LP boxed edition of Dark Fat has finally materialised. My disappointed response is not due to the box itself, which is a thing of beauty for the entire world to enjoy for thousands of years far into the distant future; the trouble stems solely from the unfortunate fact that, due to administrative miscalculation (for lack of a better phrase), I’ve received a piddling 3 copies to sell. This has created a serious hiccup in my accounting, as I expected quite a few more than that to help carry me through the completion of the new irr. album (which is coming along very nicely, by the way). To try to remedy this shortfall, I’ve come up with 2 strategies.

One is to make each of these 3 copies a special edition of my own, including a CDR copy of ‘Dark Drippings’, a 2xCDR copy of the Dark Fat vinyl audio master, and at least one piece of specially-made original artwork sized 12″ x 12″ to fit in the box. Full details will follow as soon as I figure them out. If you haven’t bought your copy of the box yet, you may want to hold off and save your pennies for this extra-ultra-snazzy version. The regular box is going for 45 euro (about $54), so this 3-copy special edition is going to be somewhat more expensive than that.

The second strategy is to create another ‘Dark Drippings’-type collection from some of the raw material that wasn’t used on other projects. Work on this new collection, titled ‘A Darker Shade Of Fat’, is already underway. I’m sure this might come across as milking the same tired cow one time more than is prudent, but the truth is there is a lot of material left to explore, and I’m making use of it in a far more unorthodox way: layering and manipulating the sources even beyond what was done on Dark Fat to create something distinctly different. So, less of an “extras and outtakes” collection, and more of a self-contained work. This new album will only be released digitally to begin with, as I don’t have the resources to make something physical right now; but I hope to make a small physical edition available in the not-too-distant future.

Also: some credits were accidentally left out of the album’s liner notes, so perhaps I can remedy that here. I assembled and mastered the original Dark Fat CD album myself, and the re-editing and remastering of the album for vinyl was also done by me. Dig that: the little man is blowing his own horn. “Toot toot toot,” says the little man.

All the best to all of you for the foreseeable future,

—msw

Sale Bundles, Part 1

Hello all:

It’s tax time (ugh) here in the States once again, and so I’m prompted to do my annual scramble in hopes of coaxing some funds into the coffers before the tax man drops the axe. I’ve put together a few different bundles of related releases, rarities and artwork — all priced in a range that will hopefully inspire wanton consumer frenzy while still bringing in enough bananas to alleviate the seasonal economic distress.

These bundles are are mostly one-of-a-kind (or very limited), so I’m taking my usual approach of not listing them in the shop to avoid multiple button-pushes on something that has already sold. If you’re interested in one of the bundles, please send me an e-mail at irrappext@gmail.com so I can confirm availability. Also, feel free to get in touch if you have questions about any of the items. Please do not use the payment buttons on any of the artwork that is already listed in the shop: the prices will not be correct.

As always, apologies to people outside of the US for the lousy postage rates.

Bundle #1:

A Beginners Guide To Nurse With Wound, part 3 [expanded version]   –   SOLD

A spectacular way to start off a NWW record collection for yourself, a lonely grandparent, or that grumpy neighbour waiting for a kidney transplant. The bundle includes a profusion of Nursey classics, old and new: Sylvie & Babs (2CD version), Bar Maldoror (2CD version), Dark Fat (2CD) + Dark Drippings bonus disc (#30 gold number edition), Shipwreck Radio Volume 1 (2CD), Shipwreck Radio Final Broadcasts, The Man With The Woman Face + bonus material disc, Soundpooling + Handjob For The Laughing Policeman bonus disc, Spiral Insana (2CD silver book edition), A Sucked Orange (2CD version), Insect & Individual Silenced (expanded), Automating Volume 3, May The Fleas Of A Thousand Camels Infest Your Armpits, Od Lot, A Possible Nursemix (CDR). 23 discs in total. All CD are brand new. The ‘Spiral Insana’ book has some wrinkling at the top left corner due to being poorly packed when it was shipped to me, but is otherwise in new condition.

A special bonus for this bundle is the piece of original artwork pictured above, drawn by yours truly and based on Steven Stapleton’s cheeky ‘Sugar Fish Drink’ capering imp character. The artwork image size is 9″ x 9″, ink on archival board, signed & dated on the back. Click on the images for a closer look.

The price for bundle #1 is $250. Total package weight is 62 oz, so Priority Mail postage in the US is an additional $20, and First Class International postage anywhere else is an additional $50 (*choke*).

A second option is available for the US: I can’t send a package containing artwork via Media Mail, but I can send the art & the discs separately. Media Mail for the bundle of discs (56 oz.) is $4.50, and First Class for the artwork (9 oz.) is $4, so a total of $8.50 to send everything using a slower delivery method & a divided package. Be aware that the two packages will not be arriving at the same time.

Bundle #2:

irr. Cassette Rarities   –   SOLD

This bundle contains a variety of irr. app. (ext.) cassette releases, all of which are limited edition releases and most of which are now out-of-print: Matériaux Déplacés, The 11-Year Backwards Sleepwalk, Flux/Crayfish (which I forgot to include in the photo), “[??]” (irr + Six Heads), Backflow Background (irr split with At Jennie Richie), Unknown Invertebrate Drama (irr split with At Jennie Richie), Cascades Of The Absurd (compilation with irr, Pink Void, At Jennie Richie, Broken Penis Orchestra, Red Squirrels), Readymades Compilation Of Arrangements (compilation with irr, At Jennie Richie, Crank Sturgeon, Vertonen), New Directions In Experimental Music (3 cassette compilation with one side each of irr, The Haters, Mlhest, Runzelstirn & Gurgelstock, Andy Ortmann, Mixed Band Philanthropist — #58/100). 11 cassettes in total.

A special bonus for this bundle is the piece of original artwork pictured above, drawn by someone who is either myself or bears an uncanny resemblance to myself. The artwork image size is 8″ x 8″, ink on archival board, signed & dated on the back. Click on the images for a closer look.

The price for bundle #1 is $90. Total package weight is 34 oz, so Priority Mail postage in the US is an additional $18.50, and First Class International postage anywhere else is an additional $35 (*sigh*).

A second option is available for the US: I can’t send a package containing artwork via Media Mail, but I can send the art & the discs separately. Media Mail for the bundle of cassettes (29 oz.) is $3.50, and First Class for the artwork (6 oz.) is $3.50, so a total of $7 to send everything using a slower delivery method & a divided package. Be aware that the two packages will not be arriving at the same time.

Bundle #3:

Eight Prints To The Wind

I recently came across a stash of surplus colour digital collage prints that had made for the exhibit at the Goodfoot in Portland a several years back, so I’ve gathered together 8 of the ones that seemed likely to be the most broadly appealing — although I’ll have to admit to having very dubious judgment when it comes to that kind of thing. All prints will be signed and are in a general 9″ to 12″ per-side range (the perfectly square one in the photos is 11″ x 11″, which should give a good idea of the relative sizes of the others). Click on the images for a closer look: the image with the black background has the original digital versions, and other image is a photo of the actual prints.

I believe I have enough prints to sell 5 separate sets of these particular 8 prints.

The price for bundle #3 is $45. Total package weight is 12 oz, so Priority Mail postage in the US is either an additional $4.50/First Class or $9/Priority, and First Class International postage anywhere else is an additional $22.50 (*sob*). Unfortunately, Media Mail is not an option for artwork.

Interest/questions: irrappext@gmail.com

Bundle #4:

Matted Prints  –  SOLD

I still have two of the colour prints that were signed, single-matted & backed for the Goodfoot exhibit, and for a short time I am offering them for sale individually at $40 each, or as a pair for $70. All boards are archival quality. Click on the image for a closer look.

Individually:

‘Invertebrate Technology’ (top image): 15 1/2″ x 11 3/8″ total matted size.
Package weight is 17 ounces, so $13 Priority Mail postage in the US, and $22.50 First Class International.

‘The 11-Year Backwards Sleepwalk’ (bottom image): 15 1/2″ x 12 3/4″ total matted size.
Package weight is 19 ounces, so $13 Priority Mail postage in the US, and $22.50 First Class International.

Bundled:

Combined package weight is 28 ounces, so $13 Priority Mail US and $22.50 First Class International. So postage is exactly the same for each individually or bundled. Media Mail is not an option for artwork, and the weights are above the 13 ounce limit for US First Class.

Interest/questions: irrappext@gmail.com

I have a few other bundles in preparation, and will try to have them listed in the next few days.

big truckloads of love to everyone

Chewing Some Fat

Hello All:

As usual, I’m running quite far behind on the schedule I’d hoped to be following, and this is prompting me to adjust my plans a little bit. I’ve found it works better to make new items available in clusters to allow people (especially overseas customers) to reduce their postage costs by combining items, so my intention has been to delay making my copies of the new NWW ‘Dark Fat’ album available until I could offer it in combination with the next two new irr. releases and a new Readymades compilation. That was the plan, but the new albums are simply taking too long, and enough people have started making inquiries about when I’d get around to dishing out some Fat that I’ve decided it’s time to get on with it. I don’t want to rush the new material arbitrarily, and I don’t want to delay making DF available so long that everyone gets fed up and buys their copies somewhere else (which may have already happened to some extent). Fortunately, I do have a couple other things to offer right now, so I’ll just be grouping everything in two smaller batches instead of all together in one.

—————————————————————————-

Nurse With Wound - Dark Fat cvr SM DARK FAT + DARK DRIPPINGS

All lot of you probably already know about the most recent Nurse With Wound 2 CD album ‘Dark Fat’, so I won’t go into too much detail about it. The album was built out of the archive of live recordings I’ve been making since the current version of NWW live activity began in 2005, but it is by no means a straightforward live document: all of the sources have been layered and manipulated to create entirely new works. I played a large role in constructing the album, as well as cleaning up all the source material, fitting all the pieces together and mastering the final result. The outcome is really rather nice, if I do say so myself, and is spectacularly packaged with new Babs Santini collages. My own stash of copies to sell is limited to 35, and, as a consequence of being the only one based in the States, I was last in line to receive them, so I’ve put together a little bonus in hopes of enticing people of buying their copies from me (although, as I mentioned before, I may have missed the boat on that as a result of delaying things for so long).

Dark Drippings coverDark Drippings bcover This extra enticement is called ‘Dark Drippings’ (the Brits out there should catch the meaning), an hour-long additional disc I’ve assembled out of ‘Dark Fat’ trimmings and alternates. I’ve created some artwork for it that closely mimics Bab’s DF cover art, while also being a bit saucier in nature (<nudge nudge> Getit? Hanh? Getit? <snort!>). A copy of ‘Dark Drippings’ is bundled with each of the 35 copies of ‘Dark Fat’ that I have for sale. This does mean that the price is a little higher, since another motive behind it was to make a little more return from the few copies I have to sell. Apologies to those you don’t want the extra disc: all my copies are being bundled and priced this way.

Here are the liner notes to provide a bit more information: “This disc is a collection of raw sources, outtakes and alternate versions from the Nurse With Wound ‘Dark Fat’ double CD. The project underwent several significant changes over the course of a year-and-a-half: first being intended as part of a box set, and then a single disc on its own, and then a single disc with a limited bonus disc of outtakes, and finally a fully-realised double disc set. Around half of the material contained here represents that initial ‘outtake’ version of the second disc, minus those sections that carried over to the released version. In keeping with the original guiding concept behind it, the additional content is either: 1) an unmodified extract of the live recordings that were altered & layered to create the tracks on ‘Dark Fat’ (such as track 5, which is an excerpt of the Scribble Seven performance at St. Peter’s Arts Centre in 2006), 2) an alternate source with distinct audio character (such as track 10, which is the direct-from-the-board version of an extract from the 2008 London Fields Lido ‘swimming pool’ concert, rather than the underwater recording used on ‘DF’), or 3) an outtake from one of the concerts that I felt was unique, or at least unusual, but would never fit in anywhere except a bits-and-bobs collection like this (such as my stirring interpretation of ‘The Old Man Of The Mountain’ on track 6, taken from our second appearance at the AvantGarde Festival in 2009, and which was the only of the three attempted performances of the song that wasn’t completely awful). As with ‘Dark Fat’ itself, piquant moments from soundchecks and wacky extracts from NWW’s solitary attempt at a reheasal (just prior to the show at Koko in 2011) have been liberally sprinkled throughout. Two tracks I’d created for the Nine Day Antler Society using NWW soundcheck sources (’A Subsidence In Possibilities Precipitated By The Peroration Of A South-Facing Markhor’ {July 2014} and ‘1959, The Observatory’ {November 2014}) have also been included.”

Dark Drippings is very simply packaged in the style of the NWW bonus discs included with ‘Soundpooling’, ‘The Man With The Woman Face’, and the ‘Shipwreck Radio’ volumes: a fully-printed CDR in a plastic sleeve with a 2-sided, 4 panel fold-out insert. The price for the DF/DD 3 disc set is $30 + postage (7 oz. @ $3 Media Mail (US) / $13.50 international). Not wanting to snub those of you who have already bought ‘Dark Fat’ from a different source (and also hoping to squeeze some additional and much-needed funds from this thing), I’m also making 50 copies of ‘Dark Drippings’ available individually for $12 + postage (3 oz. @ $3 Media Mail /$13.50 international). All 85 copies will be individually numbered, the 35 DF/DD copies numbered in gold and the 50 individual copies numbered in silver. Since I have so few copies, I’m not listing this in the shop: just contact me at irrappext@gmail.com to arrange an order or to ask questions.

Readymade Mondo Anthem cvr

READYMADE MONDO ANTHEM!

I also have a mere 5 copies of the new ‘Readymade Mondo Anthem!’ compilation cassette available for purchase. An 80-minute final hurrah from the now-defunct Readymade Tapes label, it features 2 exclusive tracks from irr. app. (ext.) plus fold-out cover & insert art from myself. This collection has actually been released by Black Horzions, as Readymades had already disintegrated before the project was fully finalised. 2 tracks each from At Jennie Richie, Vertonen, Balkh, Six Heads and Crank Sturgeon are also included, with everything wrapped up in Black Horizons’ typically stunning silver-on-black printed inserts. Copies are $10 + postage (5 oz. @ $3 Media Mail (US) / $13.50 international). Once again, since copies are so scarce I’m not going to list this item in the shop; instead, inquire at irrappext@gmail.com. Keep in mind I only have 5 copies of this item.

mini-print set FULL sm MINI PRINT SET

Lastly, I’ve created some small prints of 28 of my art pieces: 12 paintings, 8 brush & ink drawings, and 8 charcoal drawings. The images are printed on heavy 110# white paper, image sizes approximately 7 3/4″ x 7 3/4″ and the overall sizes being around 8 1/2″ x 8 1/2″. Except for the charcoal pieces, everything is full colour. To be honest, I’m not sure if this project was a good idea, and I’m a bit stumped as to how best to offer them up for sale. I’ve come up with a few different options, as follows:

individual prints are available for $5 + postage (4 oz. @ $3 First Class (US) / $13.50 international)

full set of all 8 charcoal images or 8 brush & ink images = $35 + postage (8 oz. @ $3.50 First Class (US) / $13.50 international)

full set of all 12 painted images = $50 + postage (11 oz. @ $4 First Class (US) / $22.50 international)

mix and match any 5 prints = $22 (7 oz. @ $3.50 First Class (US) / $13.50 international)

full set of 28 images = $100 (20 oz. @ $13 Priority (US) / $22.50 international)

You can better see the image options, each listed by title and a print number, by clicking these thumbnails:

As with everything else listed in this newsletter, I am not going to create a shop listing for these items — at least, not until I find out if it’s worthwhile to keep these prints in stock. To order, contact me at irrappext@gmail.com and list the prints you want by both number and title (just to be absolutely sure). If it’s a long title, any coherent abbreviation will suffice. Be aware that print orders, or any combined order including prints, can not be shipped by Media Mail: First Class or Priority will have to be used.

Combined postage can be figured for any combinations of anything listed here or in the shop. And, as always, apologies to overseas customers for the obscene international postage rates!

More news about new irr. releases and various other treasures will hopefully follow later in the month.

NWW in Tilburg & some light entertainment

Hello all:

NWW is performing on the final day (May 15th) of the Incubate festival in Tilburg, Netherlands: full details can be found at the Incubate site here. Stop by and say hello if you’re attending. I’ll have some discs from the irr. shop on hand, so it’ll be a good opportunity to avoid the horrendous postal rates if any of you Dutch residents ever wanted to order something.

Speaking of international performances, I’ve established an irr. app. (ext.) channel on YouTube (here) and have added four video excerpts from the many and varied irr. concerts throughout the centuries. More video bits and blobules for your perusal will be added soon. The direct links to the four videos are below.

On the release front, the ‘Dark Fat’ double CD I assembled for & with Nurse With Wound finally has been pressed and should be in stock in a couple of weeks. More news about that will be posted when I have copies in hand.

best wishes

NWW in London

The eie shop will be closed between March 15th and 25th, as I’ll be away in London for another Nurse With Wound performance and will be unable to process orders during that time. Details about the show (and tickets) can be found here. Stop by stage left and say hello if you’re attending! I should have some internet access while I’m gone, but my ability to respond to messages will be sporadic.

A number of new projects are in the works: new albums, old albums, art projects, video projects, and maybe a podcast. Progress is always slow (because I am) but I should have some more details to share shortly after I get back. One detail I can give now: 5 out of 8 tracks are completed for the restored edition of the essentially-unreleased 2nd irr. album ‘Foreign Matter, Nor Frequency Carrier’ from 1998/99, with track 6 getting very close. A preview of track 1 can be heard at the irr. Soundcloud page here.

Also, a visual (and possibly audio) collaboration with Head Nurse Steven Stapleton has been underway for several months, and is now nearing the finish line. I’ve been making steady progress on my part of it, and will be working hard to finish as soon as I shake off the jetlag. The first piece in the series can be seen below.

Best wishes to all for the approaching Springtime!

I’ll be away in Sweden from January 20th to the 26th for a pair of NWW shows, so I will be unable to process any orders until the 27th and will have little or no internet access while I’m gone. It’s probably not the best time of the year to take a trip to Sweden, but I’m hopeful to arrive back home with all of my fingers and toes. If you happen to be in Sweden on those days, come by and say hello! Information about the shows can be found here:
